Bridges Project

The Bridges is an project initiated by Muzyka Centrum Art Society from Krakow in 2003 in form of international cooperation with London Sinfonietta, Association Musik fuer Heute from Hannover and Centre Grame from Lyon. The project brings together presentation of outstanding new music works with education activities with youth and children. The workshops led by artists from the project partners organisations are based on composition rules derived from modern music works. These rules serve the young people to create their own music. The famous new music virtuoso orchestra, The London Sinfonietta has been the pioneer and leading authority in new music education for many years. Their achievements are documented on their website: www.londonsinfonietta.org.uk. The French and German project partners: Grame from Lyon (www.grame.fr) and Musik fuer heute from Hannover (www.DasNeueEnsemble.de) have also gained much experience in similar activities. The results of their work prove that often people who have never been to a new music concert can learn to appreciate even very complex music, which is far from what is offered to them by popular culture and traditional music education. The project partners aim at creating an international forum for new music artists involved in education activities and their intention is to continue the project by organizing concerts, workshops, seminars and conferences.
The project is addressed many peolpe: amateurs, music lovers and wide public but also to teachers, institutions of music and general education and culture authorities as well. They are taking part in concerts, lectures and discussions on the project partners education activities. The meetings and discussion should help people and organizations involved in the promotion of modern music.
In the 2003/2004 concert season the following Bridges events took place:

workshop led by Das Neue Ensemble (Musik f. heute) with children from Krakow in June, September and November, 2003.
the Bridges Festival in Krakow in November, 2003 with performances by musicians from the project partners organisations, conferences and presentations.
London Sinfonietta concert in Queen Elizabeth Hall in London with the first performance of Harrison Birtwistle's Theseus Game. The event is a part of Londons Sinfonietta education project birtwistle-online.
Concerts, workshops and conferences in January, 2004 in Hannover with all the project partners.
First Polish performance of Pierre Boulez Sur Incises by Das Neue Ensemble in Krakow (February, 2004).
Concerts and workshops with young people from Krakow and Lyon led by Grame musicians from November, 2003 to March, 2004.

The documentation includes the composition games used in the Bridges workshops with music examples and works created by young people. European Modern Orchestra

The European Modern Orchestra project consisted of internationally prepared concerts performed together by musicians from the project co-organisers countries. The newly formed Muzyka Centrum Orchestra based in Cracow joined their forces with young musicians from Algoritmo Ensemble (Italy), Das Neue Ensemble (Germany) and Grame (France). Each co-production concert was led by a conductor from the project co-organiser country and included soloists from Italy, France, Germany and Poland.
The project started with Contemporary Italian Music Days in Cracow (11-17 December, 2005). The programme consisted of carefully selected works by most important Italian composers of the post II World War period such as Battistelli, Berio, Castiglioni, Clementi, Fedele, Lombardi, Nono, Scelsi, Sciarrino, Stroppa and others. Most of the works were first Polish performances. The young Cracow musicians performed together with Italians under the direction of conductor Marco Angius and with Alvise Vidolin as sound projectionist. The other concerts presented top Italian and Polish new music performers: flutists Mario Caroli and Roberto Fabbriciani, Algoritmo Ensemble from Rome, singer Agata Zubel from Wroclaw, oboe player Mariusz Pedzialek and Camerata Silesia singers ensemble from Katowice.
On 30 April, 2006 Muzyka Centrum Orchestra performed in Hannover together with Das Neue Ensemble under conductor Stephan Meier and with German and Polish soloists. The programme included, among other, first performance of Baclars - Concerto for Clarinet and Two Ensembles written especially for the European Modern Orchestra project by Boguslaw Schaeffer. The concert was repeated in Cracow on 28 September, 2006.
On 7 May, 2006 Muzyka Centrum-Grame co-production concert took place in Cracow. The programe included, among other, works commissioned by Grame with Franck Bedrossian, Pedro Amaral and Robert Pascal. Young musicians had the occasion to perform with the world leading new music viola player Christophe Desjardins.
The concert with Salvatore Sciarrino masterpiece Quaderno di strada at the Warsaw Autumn Festival on September 25 was considered by many critics and a large part of the audience as a best concert of the festival, which for 50 years has been considered as one of most important new music events in Europe. The work was played by joined forces of Muzyka Centrum Orchestra and Algoritmo Ensemble with conductor Marco Angius and baritone singer Otto Katzamaier. At the same festival the Cracow performance of Luigi Nono Das atmende Klarsein, which took place at the Italian Days in December, 2005, was repeated with the Camerata Silesia (Poland), Roberto Fabbriciani and Alvise Vidolin (Italy) and the collaboration of the musicians found its continuation with the performance of the same work in the Italian Feltre (29 October, 2006) and the further planned performances.
The three concerts in-between September 28 - 30 were the significant part of the project at the Academy of Music in Krakow:
Muzyka Centrum Orchestra with Udo Grimm - clarinet and Stephan Meier - conductor on September 28 performed music by D.Jaskot, P.Mykietyn, W.Lutoslawski, B.Schaeffer and L.Zielinska.
On September 29 Polish-German Ensemble with Sascha Armbruster - tenor sax, Sabine Schneider - soprano, Ruediger Bohn - conductor, realized the concert with the music of V.Baltakas, A.Szczetynski, B.A.Zimmermann, J.Wozny and E.Poppe.
The concert by Christophe Desjardins and Muzyka Centrum Orchestra soloist at the Lyon Conservatory on 22 October, 2006 was the last part of the main programm of European Modern Orchestra project.
The project gave to the young musicians from the countries of the co-organisers of the project, a chance to perform together with European most outstanding musicians and the artistic results achieved were praised in reviews of the project events. What we consider as the project biggest success is that international co-production of high quality new music performances started by the European Modern Orchestra project will find its continuation in the future.
